Haemophilia is a hereditary condition that impairs blood clotting, making it difficult to control bleeding due to deficient or absent clotting factors. The main types are Haemophilia A (Factor VIII deficiency) and Haemophilia B (Factor IX deficiency).
Symptoms vary in severity and include prolonged bleeding after injuries, surgeries, or dental procedures; easy bruising; joint bleeds (hemarthroses) causing pain and swelling; and spontaneous bleeding. Diagnosis involves blood tests measuring clotting factors, often identified during childhood, particularly with a family history.
While incurable, haemophilia is managed through replacement therapy for deficient clotting factors, either preventatively or during bleeding episodes. Emerging treatments like gene therapy show promising potential. Specialized care and multidisciplinary follow-ups are vital to prevent complications and ensure a good quality of life.
